Cause and Effect
Today I am moving on to the third law of Deepak Chopra’s “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success.” This one is the Law of Karma. I think everyone knows what karma means. It’s the old saying, “What goes around, comes around.”
Mr. Chopra has some great insight to clarify this law a little better:
“The Law of Karma implies conscious choice making. When we chose actions that bring happiness and success to others, the fruit of our karma is happiness and success. . . When you make any choice , ask yourself two things: ‘What are the consequences of this choice?’ and ‘Will the choice I make bring happiness to me and those around me?’ There is always one choice which will create maximum happiness for both you and those around you.” (pg 40-41)
So what are some ways to practice living the Law of Karma today? One suggestion Mr. Chopra makes is mentioned above – conscious decisions throughout your day that are best for you and others around you. I think this is a particularly important one to get us outside of ourselves and to remember we aren’t an island operating independently – our actions and our lives weave and intersect others and we are responsible for actively trying to improve those interactions too (not just our own!). Another great suggestion is to meditate. By taking time out of your day to meditate and “reset” your mind. Deepak Chopra suggests meditation is like washing a dirty towel. Every time you go into and come out of meditation your mind and karma get a little cleaner. (46) Finally, let your heart and your body guide your decisions. There is such wisdom and intuition in our bodies – we need to listen to them! They are our compass for decision making. Your heart knows the truth. Your stomach will quite literally and physically lead you to a correct decision. Your body should feel calm, open and warm when you’re doing the right things, and tense, upset or disturbed when you are heading down the wrong path. Listen to your body and your heart! They usually know more then your head.
Today let’s create a great day and remember we are sowing the seeds of our own karma.
“Karma is the eternal assertion of human freedom . . . Our thoughts, our words, and deeds are the threads of the net which we throw around ourselves.”
